Project Concept

An open laboratory generating innovations by enhancing the synergy effect of the group.

The business base of the Kewpie Corporation comprises six businesses: egg, salad and ready-made food, processed food, fine chemical, logistics system and its core business of seasoning such as dressing and mayonnaise.

The Sengawa Factory, closed in 2011, assumed the role of the main factory producing Kewpie Mayonnaise for more than sixty years. Utilizing the symbolic location of the company, the Sengawa Kewport was built in May, 2014. The Sengawa Kewport is a next generation compound office merging the research & development and office functions with the objective of long-term growth of the Kewpie group.

Assignment

・The concept of the office creation is “generated from the conversation, leading to the future.”

・It means the creation and management of a unique space that promotes conversation, the work style innovation leading to the future and the creation of new value by taking advantage of integration of the office and R&D functions.

Solutions

・By alternating office floors and laboratory floors, we created a mechanism in which traffic between floors is increased. Thereby fostering communication among employees with different duties such as sales people and researchers.

・Each floor is in an open one-plate structure.

・The laboratories have been rearranged to have plenty of open space.

・The dual ring structure with the outer and inner hallways has been provided to encourage communication.

・Tables have been placed in the open spaces to facilitate new conversations.

・The communication spaces near the laboratories have been positioned as spaces to link knowledge and information and stimulate imagination.

・The open laboratory which allows for collaboration with outside experts has been set up to form the mechanism for the creation of open innovation.
