Seeing, Connecting, Developing - Student Union Building SAKURAUM -

Meio University is a public university in Nago City located in the northern part of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, 1.5 hours by car from Naha City.

The university's spacious campus is located in rich nature where the magnificent view of the sea in emerald green opens out and the subtropical vegetation of Yanbaru grows thickly.

The "Meio Student Union Building SAKURAUM" was built at the heart of the campus as the memorial project commemorating the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the university and the 5th anniversary of becoming a municipal university corporation.

"SAKURAUM" assumes an important role not only as a place for "the self-directed study community for the students" to support their learning based on their senior-junior relationships, but also as a place to materialize an environment where the faculty, personnel, students and local citizens can study autonomously and to encourage interaction among and between the people inside and outside the university.

Assignment

Meeting the core concept of “Seeing, Connecting, and Developing” while fostering communication with local communities in the peaceful nature of Northern Okinawa is the key point regarding how to create a space which nurtures and produces people qualified for globalization.

Solutions

After considering the local characteristics, we surveyed and analyzed the opinions of the university employees, students and designers; held plenty of discussions; and pursued the best suitable balance of the furniture, space and information design. In particular, we repeatedly simulated the diversified and student-oriented usage manners, and thus created the optimal space based on the simulation results.
